Term One

The students of the fifth grade began the year working with the visual concept of LINE including types of lines (horizontal, vertical, diagonal, curved etc.) and the relationships that these lines have with each other (parallel, perpendicular, echoed etc.). Through a series of demonstrations, students strengthened their basic drawing skills with observational drawings, contour sketching and introductory perspective drawing. Students in the fifth grade are also learning the process of developing complex drawings by beginning with basic geometric shapes (squares, circles and triangles) and then adding details to their established forms later. This foundation skill will be continually built upon throughout their four years at Rising Tide. Finally, as part of a cross-curricular project with Social Studies and ELA, the fifth grade ended term one by creating expressive and colorful skull masks in the tradition of the "Day of the Dead" holiday out of chipboard and acrylic paint.
